Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

WEEK 6 Round Up Term 3 2017

The staff at Ladysmith Public School are very excited about the NAPLAN results as the students showed good growth from years 3 to 5 , and 5 to 7. As we are striving to meet the premier's priorities which include moving students into the top two bands we are always analysing assessment results to improve our practice.

This data and other data gathered over the next few weeks will drive the 2018 3 year school plan.

Staff and students have been reflecting on the past three years of teaching and learning and we have been asking parents for their feedback too.

This week we have available another avenue for staff, students and community members to provide reflection and a vision for the coming years. Where would you like to see your child head, what are your priorities around education and how can we provide them. Senior students will approach community members who visit our school asking them to complete the survey and parents have been sent the link. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so we data which will drive the schools' directions.

Back after Education Week- we are starting our evaluation of the last three year school plan as well as beginning to determine the direction of our school for the 2018-2020 years.

We started by asking parents why they send their children to our school.

Many reasons are given for sending students to our school .

Here are some that reoccurred frequently in the answers.

Parents had experienced small schools and they felt it would provide the best opportunities for their children.

Individual students' needs are met

The talk around town was that Ladysmith would provide many opportunities for the students.

Convenient as the school is close.

Information nights provide a feeling of positivity and individuality.

This will form the basis of our school vision along with other feedback we get from community members, staff and students.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.

Students and staff found themselves surrounded by robots.

What a way for us to learn how to meet challenges and work our way out of the Learning Pit.

Students can be heard here telling us all about the experience.

Ladysmith Public School is collaborating with Smiles Onsite to promote healthier, happier smiles at our school! This incredible service is being offered for FREE under the federal government's Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), and comes along with the chance to grab some amazing prizes.

All students will be given a consent form to take home so that they can participate, and also so that they can go in the draw to win prizes!!

How does it work?

The Child Dental Benefit Schedule grants all eligible parents with $1000 Medicare benefit which can be used towards dental expenses per child, over a two year period. Eligible parents should receive a confirmation letter; however if you are still unsure, Smiles Onsite can check for you on completion of their consent form.

Can I make use of this service if I'm not eligible?

Of course! Smiles Onsite can do almost everything that your local dentist can do on board their unique mobile Clinics. If you would like them to see your child for a scale and clean, fillings, fissure seals etc., these services can be offered with NO GAP payable.

This service is a great opportunity to get kids into the habit of good oral hygiene, and we hope you're as excited about it as we are!

You can fill out the dental consent form for your son or daughter by selecting this link - https://form.jotform.co/70917539977879

If you have any further questions about this program or your eligibility, please contact Smiles Onsite directly on 1800 276 453.

Our P & C had a very successful AGM and ordinary meeting on Wednesday evening, which saw some changes to the executive.

Congratulations to Lisa Eady who was elected President for another year, Lisa comes to the position with experience from holding the position before. Vice-President is Fiona Lehmann

Katrina Roberts has moved into the Secretary position with Liz Chapman taking on Vice Secretary .

Fleur Muller will continue in the position as treasurer .

Please see attached minuets from the meetings plus a Draft Constitution which will be discussed at a special meeting next month.

Both at P & C meetings and through a newssheet sent home last week, Ms Sturman has detailed changes to school finance systems coming this year. We are now in the final stages of the changeover that will be fully implemented on May 22nd of this year. To ensure a smooth transition there will be some changes to payment acceptances in the two weeks leading up to the day it all starts. From May 12th, the Department of Education's Finance Directorate will remove POP (Parent online Payment) temporarily from our school website. This means that as they close our bank account and transition us to the new format, families will be UNABLE to use this facility. In addition, we will also be unable to accept any CASH or CHEQUE payments between 17th May and May 22nd. From May 23rd cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before, and as soon as POP is reinstated, we will let you know through the school app and subsequent newsletter. We are also working to ensure no monies are due in and around the transition period, just so families aren't caught out trying to make payments into accounts that will no longer exist. Thank you for your patience and understanding as the changes are introduced. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call the office to discuss.

This was set at the P & C meeting on Wednesday with no increase from last year.

The general Parent School Contribution is a voluntary contribution to the school and is set at $47.00 per child for the whole year. We would greatly appreciate if this could be forwarded to the school office during Term 1, if possible, to assist with planning of the budget for the coming year.

Year 5 leaders are off to their first leadership day on Thursday and the PSSA Swimming carnival is on Friday.

This is assessment week and all students are completing their learning in a special book that will come home for sharing. These books are to come back as they will be like a boomerang, they will come home every 5 weeks.

The attachment above is for you to read - our administration system is changing and there will be a period when payments cannot be made to the school. Please make yourself aware by reading the attachment.

Information night on Wednesday was well attending with 76% of our families joining in a session outlining many aspects of our school. Then each teacher shared information with parents and everyone joined in a P & C BBQ which was followed by a meeting.

Feedback had been positive around the value of such a gathering.

Your sharing of ideas around instilling community pride in our students was very positive. As a result we will start a community vegetable patch this week with a group of interested students. When this is underway we will be calling on any community members who are happy to come a give some assistance.

The hot weather made us thinking of cool ways of having sport and assemblies.

Captains received their badges on Friday at assembly too.

The week ahead should be cooler, with Bluearth on Wednesday, music and choir on Friday.

Everyone arrived back safely after the excursion to Howman's Gap. It was a wonderful experience with so many activities. The students participated in many team building sessions which led to a wonderful end results. Year 6 were able to bond and form a cohesive group for their last event together which was pleasing. Year 2,3 4 & 5 had many challenging yet satisfying experiences such as orienteering, challenging themselves on a giant swing, hiking in the high country, rock climbing and completing the challenge trail.

Those who stayed at school also had many challenges and were treated to a fabulous day on Friday when Tarcutta students and principal came over for the day. They all participated in science and maths activities.

This week Intensive swimming starts so remember your swimmers, towel and goggles on Monday.

Play practice will be in full swing and costumes need to be at school by Friday.

During term 3 2016 our community was surveyed around the use of additional funds to be used to employ an additional teacher to provide smaller learning groups for all our students.

The school captains surveyed many community members who came into our school and the survey went home via the newsletter for anyone else to complete.

The results showed overwhelming support for additional funds to be used to employ an additional teacher so learning groups can remain smaller and individual needs are focused on.

The students performed fantastically. There is a video on the Departments Art Unit Facebook page of us playing one of the pieces.

Well done to our Eisteddfod performers. The Choir proved that perseverance and dedication pays off. Students felt the elation of success at the eisteddfod on Friday. The growth in the life-long learning strategies of responsibility, building confidence to overcome unfamiliar situations as well as learning to cope in new circumstances was apparent and noticeable.

Thank you to Julie for her perseverance and guidance with the students. Dedicated learning and teaching was evident in the children's performances. Thank you to the parents for supporting the school and coming along to watch on the day.

After a successful year of debating students can have a rest. We started the year with a debating workshop where 8 students learnt the basics of debating. All students gave it their best efforts and learnt so much about seeing topics from different perspectives and were able to give different points of view on a given topic.

We had two teams who became known as Ladysmith Yellow and Ladysmith Green.

After five rounds these two teams needed to debate off for a zone final. Then Ladysmith green debated Euraongilly Public School in a close encounter which eventually eliminated them from the Premiers Deabting Challenge.

A wonderful year of growth, learning and development for these students.

Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

For 2014, participation in the NCCD will be on an opt-out basis. That is, parents will need to indicate if they do not want their child to be counted. A form for this purpose is attached to the template letter.

Parents should be provided with sufficient information in order for them to decide if they want their child included in the NCCD. As part of this process, parents should be reassured that the data collected will be protected by state and federal privacy laws.

Attached is a fact sheet for parents and an information letter.fact sheet for parents (pdf 43 KB)

PSSA Small Schools Soccer Knockout Competetion

Primary students travelled to Bemboka for Round 2 of the PSSA Small Schools Soccer knockout on Wednesday 8th August.

We all had a wonderful trip with coach Brendan, driver Bernard and Manager Sharon.

Bemboka community welcomed us with open arms, some students billeted with two families and the rest slept on the library floor.

The game was fast and furious and everyone played exceptioanlly well. Through the coaching from Brendan every child has improved out of sight and they all played well.

The score was 4-2 in Bemboka's favour.

We experienced some wonderful weather on the way home which become one of the highlights.

The students are keen to play again next year and have asked Brendan to coach them, fortunately he has accepted the offer.
